ACTIVITIES OF CHENGALPATTU DIABETIC CARE AND RESEARCH CENTRE
An Unit Of Sree Renga Nursing Home


The 3 main objectives of this center are
I. To create awareness about diabetes mellitus and to educate the public in regular basis.
II. To conduct free diabetes screening camps.
III. To provide counseling and treatment for diabetes and follow up action.

I. DIABETIC AWARENESS & EDUCATION

1.
Various Free Diabetic Camps are being conducted monthly in the center and in nearby villages. Consultants in other specialities also visit the camps and render service purely on honorary basis.
2.
Monthly free Diabetic education programmes are being conducted in the Diabetic Centre with the help of
  •  Audiovisual aids
  •  Related lectures
  •  Demonstration of Diabetic Diet Recipes by trained Dieticians
3. Various interactive sessions are held between Diabetic consultants and patients during which patients can clear their doubts about Diabetes and get adequate enlightenment.
4. Post cards are sent to nearly 1500 Diabetic patients who have registered in the center each month, to remind them to attend the monthly Free Diabetic Education programme.
5. Diabetic exhibitions are being conducted in the villages around Chengalpattu to create awareness about Diabetes and to educate the people.

Nov 2001- under the auspices of World Diabetes Day in Chengalpattu

•  Jan 2002- at Kancheepuram which is about 30 kms from Chengalpattu along with the Lions Club of Kancheepuram to educate the public about the Diet intake & lifestyle modification.
•  April 2002 -at Thirukalukundram which is about 25kms from Chengalpattu along Rotary club of Eagle town to educate the public on diabetes, eye care and foot care.
•  June 2002 – at Pudupatinm, kalpakkam which is about 30kms from Chengalpattu with the help of Rotary club, on Diabetic diet.
February 2003 to August 2003- at Kancheepuram, Vandavasi,Kalpakkam, karunkuzhi, Wallajabad, Chembakkam & Uthiramerur
  These mini towns are in an ambit of 20 to 30 kms.
6. A monthly Diabetic Journal is also published from the center in the local language Tamil by the name “Innippum Nivaranamum” to make people understand about diabetes and lead a healthier life.
   
   

II FREE DIABETES CAMPS SCREENING

   
1. Free monthly screening programmes, blood sugar testing is being done in the center for nearly 300-400 patients every month.
2. Free Screening Camps is held in various nearby villages.
3. About 50 camps have been conducted in various villages in the past 2 years and we have screened approximately 15000 patients in the camps.
4.

About 10 Diabetic exhibitions have been held in various villages in the local language.

 
• 

Free Diabetic detection and treatment camp was organized at Thirukalukundram village in April 2002 for 300 people with the help of Rotary club of Thirukalukundram.

Free Diabetes screening camp was held in Pudupatinam village near Kalpakkam in June 2002 along with Rotary club of Thirukalukundram and Rotary Club of Chengalpattu.
Free screening camp held with the help of Lions Club in Mahabalipuram for nearly 400 people.
•  Free diabetes screening camp held with the help of Lion's Club in Kancheepuram for 555 people in Jan 2002.
Free diabetes screening camp was done at various villages like PV Kalathur Thachur, Thirukalukundram, Kalpakkam etc all within 20 to 30 km from Chengalpattu.
•  November2002- August 2003 free diabetes screening camp was done at various villages like Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Kezhacherry, Maraimalai Nagar, Vandavasi, Kalpakkam, Karunkuzhi, Walajabad, Uthiramerur.
•  February 2003- Free Diabetic screening and exhibition was done at Kancheepuram along with Jan kalyan (Sankara Mutt) & Lions Club.
•  Free Diabetes screening camp has been done in various Government and Non Government organizations throughout Chengalpattu, in
•  Banks…… Canara Bank, State Bank of India. Indian Overseas Bank, KCC Bank, Urban Bank
•  Life Insurance Corporation of India
•  Schools, Post Office, Factories
•  Telephone department, Fire station
•  Vetinary hospital
Agriculture office, Municipal office, Sub Collector office. Advice has been provided about diet changes and medical care needed to combat diabetes.
   

III DIABETES COUNSELLING AND TREATMENT

 
1. Computerised case sheets are maintained for all Diabetic patients in the center.
2. Free diabetic treatment drugs are given in the various diabetic camps conducted in the villages.
3. People are educated about the life style modifications to combat diabetes and to improve the quality of life.
4. Various consultants are called in to talk about the various complications related to Diabetes.
5. Trained Dieticians are available in the center to counsel the patients about Diabetic diet.
6. Trained Diabetic nurses are involved in the education of the patients about the importance of foot care in diabetes.
7. Patients suffering from various complications related to Diabetes are admitted & treated in the Nursing Home.
